Asian Hornet – ID & Reporting Checklist

Quick reference for spotting, recording and reporting safely.

Identify (at a glance)

  • Legs: bright yellow.
  • Abdomen: mostly dark with a single broad orange band toward the end.
  • Size: worker ~19–24 mm (queen up to ~30 mm). Smaller and darker than European hornet.
  • Behaviour: hawking in front of hives; feeding on fallen fruit; nest high in trees or building voids.

Photo & Evidence Tips

  • Use zoom; do not move closer. Avoid blur and heavy shadow.
  • Try for a side view showing yellow legs and orange band.
  • Include a reference (e.g., ruler, coin, hive entrance) if practical.
  • No photo? Record detailed notes anyway (colour, size, behaviour).

After You Report

  • Authorities may request your original photo/video and more detail.
  • They may visit to assess and locate a nest if warranted.
  • Not every report receives a reply; all verified data helps response.

Safety

Do not attempt to destroy a nest yourself. Nests can contain thousands of hornets and are dangerous if disturbed. Control must be carried out by trained professionals.
